Why Kenya is Perfect for UAE Travellers?

Kenya has a few advantages that make it outstanding for travellers coming from the UAE compared to other African safari countries like South Africa or Botswana.

  • Short flight: Nairobi is only a five hour hop away from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, short than most flights to safari countries in southern Africa.
  • No time change: Kenya is on East Africa Time, which fits to the time in the UAE for most of the year.
  • Easy entry procedure: Residents and citizens of the UAE get their Kenya eTA online, without having to go to an embassy.
  • Safari highlights within easy reach: Maasai Mara, Amboseli, and Tsavo are all within a few hours by road or a short domestic flight from Nairobi.
  • Good value for money: After currency conversion between AED and Kenyan Shillings, the local food, transport, and mid-range hotels are often cheaper than in the Emirates.

None of that means Kenya offers less to see than its competitors. On the contrary, Kenya has not only snow-capped Mount Kenya near the equator and the Great Rift Valley, but also more than 40 national parks and reserves as well as a coastline along the Indian Ocean. The combination of big game, mountain air and white sand beaches, all in one country and reachable within a short flight, makes Kenya a good option for a first African safari.

eTA of Kenya for UAE Travellers

  • All visitors in Kenya have switched from the traditional visa application process to Electronic Travel Authorisation commonly referred to as eTA visa application process.
  • The UAE national and residents must apply for an eTA visa on the government website before boarding the plane.
  • On the website, you will upload the passport page and the passport photos then submits online.
  • It may take some days for the eTA application to be processed and hence one should apply at least a week before travelling to make sure they do not miss their plane.
  • After the approval of the application, it will be sent to your email address in the form of PDF file.
  • You should save a copy either digitally in your phone or printed out because immigration officers at JKIA Airport may ask for it together with your passport.
  • Standard eTA visa allows one to stay in Kenya for a maximum period of 90 days and the visa is for tourism, business visits and transit.
  • In case you want to visit other countries such as Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda before returning to Kenya, one should check the eTA conditions before travelling.

Best Places to Visit in Kenya

1. Nairobi

Kenya tours always begin from the city of Nairobi, which is the capital city of Kenya. Nairobi National Park is adjacent to the city center, meaning that visitors will be able to view lions, giraffes and rhinos against the backdrop of the skyline which is a rare experience. The Giraffe Center offers visitors the rare opportunity to feed rare Rothschild giraffes from a different level. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust manages an elephant orphanage for visitors.

2. Masai Mara National Reserve

The Maasai Mara is the most renowned Kenyan reserve and the biggest reason that most tourists from the UAE visit. It is well known for the Great Migration when over a million of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River every year between about July and October, being chased by crocodile and followed by lion. Even in the non-migration months the Mara prides itself on having a high density of the lion leopard cheetah, elephant and buffalo populations.

3. Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is found at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, and a beautiful sunrise will provide you with the opportunity to take photos of the elephants strolling alongside the snowy mountain in the background, despite the fact that Kilimanjaro lies in Tanzania. Amboseli National Park has the largest number of elephants remaining in Kenya.

4. Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru

Both lakes are close to each other, and both are a 2-to-3-hour drive from Nairobi, making them a popular add-on for those with limited time in Kenya. Lake Nakuru National Park is famous for its rhinos, and the black and white variety can often be seen on the park floor, and in the lake, flamingos are often seen which depends on the water level. Lake Naivasha offers boat rides with hippos, while a walk through Hell's Gate will allow you to see giraffes and zebras.

5. The Kenyan Coast and Diani Beach

For those wishing to combine a safari with a beach break, Diani Beach, located on the south coast and famed for its white sands and calm warm waters, is surrounded by a coral reef making for safe swimming. The coastal city of Mombasa, not far from the safari circuit, has a mix of Swahili, Arab and Indian cultures which are clear in the ancient architecture and cuisine. Many UAE tourists choose to take a safari for four or five days and then spend three or four days at the coast.

6. Tsavo East and Tsavo West

Tsavo is the largest protected area in Kenya and is comprised of two parks. The Tsavo East National Park is known for the red soil where the elephants roll and get a rusty colored body, as well as large, open planes. In Tsavo West, there are varied grounds, lava beds, springs, and the Mzima Springs where hippos and crocodiles can be viewed through a glass window.

What to Expect

The quality you require depends on what you can pay and what kind of holiday you want.

  • Shared group safari: You can join other travellers in a safari van or minibus with a roof for photos. This is the cheapest option and ideal for independent or small groups on a budget.
  • Self: Your vehicle and driver guide (private driver) will allow you to revisit places of interest and travel at your own pace and is more expensive but ideal for families or independent travellers.
  • Camps or Lodges: Luxury tented camps and lodges permanent or semi-permanent camps either inside or near the reserves often with private decks, full board food, and tour included in the rate.
  • Balloon safaris: These are advertised in the Maasai Mara. You undertake a parachute flight over the plains of a morning and then enjoy a champagne breakfast. This is not a safari format, and you must arrange it as an add-on activity.
  • Walking safaris: Also, some conservancies outside of the main reserves, led by an armed ranger. Great to have a close-up view of tracks, smaller wildlife, and plants that are missed when you are in a vehicle.

Game drives are generally scheduled for early morning and late afternoon. This is when the animals are most active and it is cooler. The usual safari schedule is a morning drive, a rest period in the middle of the day, and a sunset or evening drive. Night drives are only permitted in private conservancies adjacent to the national parks.

Kenya Travel Cost for UAE Travellers

Prices can range a great deal, based on the season, what lodge you go for, whether you are on a join or private safari. Here is rough indication prices based on current costs and are in no way quotes.

  • Flights: around AED 1,500–2,500 round-trip direct flight (though you'll almost certainly have one stopover) from Dubai to Nairobi via Emirates or Kenya Airways.
  • ETA for Kenya: A small one-time fee per traveler, made online while applying.
  • Sharing budget safari: AED 400 to 1000 per day per person, including meals and park fees.
  • Mid-range safari: AED 1000 to 3000 per day per person, with own car and comfortable tented camp.
  • Luxury safari: AED 2000 per day per person, includes premium lodges, private guide, and additional things such as hot air balloons rides.
  • Entrance fees for the parks: AED 200 to 300 per adult per day, charged separately and depending on a park, included in the price of the safaris' packages.
  • Price of additional stay on the coast: mid-range accommodation in a beach hotel in Diani or Mombasa costs from AED 290 to 700 per night, less expensive than inland safari lodges.

Because 1 AED equals approximately 35 Kenyan Shillings, local meals, taxis, and souvenirs in Nairobi seem affordable to a businessperson from the UAE. For instance, a meal in a moderate restaurant costs around AED 30 to AED 60, while an Uber ride in the city costs less than AED 20 on average. It is advisable to carry some local currency and a foreign bank card to pay for minor purchases because some low-end guest houses and remote safari camps only accept cash.

Travel Tips for UAE Travellers

  • Make sure you book the safari lodges and book your Maasai Mara flights early in the year, as the camps are booked in advance due to migration between July and October.
  • Pack your neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive green, and brown), as well as a light jacket because of cold mornings, a hat, and sunscreen for the sunny noon.
  • There is a risk of contracting malaria in most of the areas where you would go on safari. Speak with your doctor about malaria pills in advance and take an insect repellent.
  • Giving a tip is expected from tourists in the Kenyan tourism sector. The drivers, guides, and lodge staff usually get tipped every day, as well as there being suggestions for appropriate tip amounts in most lodges.
  • Mobile phones work well in Kenyan cities and even within safari camps. A local SIM card is very cheap and easy to obtain in the airport.
  • Swahili and English are the official languages, and English is commonly spoken in hotels, camps, and tourist areas, so the language won't be a problem.
  • It is possible to obtain Halal food in Nairobi and Mombasa, considering the number of Muslims in Kenya, and the bigger establishments can adjust according to requirements if prior arrangements are made.

Conclusion

Kenya presents a quick fly-in for UAE residents without jet-lag issues, an easy online procedure for entry, and even a big five safari – all in one go! If migration is your purpose, choose your season and then select the type of safari you can afford and conclude with a bit of time at the coast.
